Which Road Trip from Salzburg Is Worth Hiring a Car For?
Updated October 23, 2026 · 6 min read
If you hire a car for one Salzburg day, make it the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in its open season. Drive south through the Salzach valley towards Zell am See, continue to Fusch and enter at the Ferleiten toll station. The goal is not to rush across a pass: allow a full day for Fuscher Törl, Hochtor and Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, then return the same way or continue towards Heiligenblut only if your wider itinerary supports it.
Why this route needs a car
The official road runs for 48 kilometres between Fusch in Salzburg and Heiligenblut in Carinthia. Viewpoints, exhibitions and short walks are distributed along it, so your own vehicle lets you stop when cloud lifts or a viewpoint is quiet. The operator counts 36 hairpin bends along the route, some of them tight. With the stops and the approach from Salzburg this is not a half-day outing.
Fuscher Törl is the useful first panorama. Hochtor marks the high crossing, while the spur to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe faces the Grossglockner and Pasterze Glacier. Do not confuse that viewpoint with driving to the summit: the mountain itself is not reached by road.
Season, toll and weather
This is a seasonal high-Alpine road, not a normal year-round connection. Its official prices and opening-times page publishes the current opening date, daily access hours, toll and any closures. Check it on the morning of departure. Snow, wind or other mountain weather can change access at short notice, even when the calendar suggests summer. In wintry conditions the operator requires winter tyres or summer tyres with snow chains; ask the rental company before booking whether your car has them.
The road has its own vehicle toll. That is separate from the Austrian motorway vignette that may be required on your approach. Ask the rental company whether the vignette is included and confirm that the agreement permits this route; never infer either point from the number plate.
Stops without turning the day into a race
Choose three anchors rather than every lay-by: Fuscher Törl for the first broad view, Hochtor for the change between Salzburg and Carinthia, and Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe for the visitor centre and glacier outlook. The official site describes a short panorama path at the latter, but mountain paths still require suitable shoes and conditions.
Leave the Edelweiss Peak spur for another time if narrow, steep mountain driving makes you tense. The main road already supplies the landscape. In autumn, shorter opening hours and early darkness make an ambitious return schedule a poor bargain.
Who should choose another day out
Skip this drive outside the published season, in a doubtful forecast, or if hairpins demand more concentration than enjoyment. A guided day trip is also better when everyone wants to look at the scenery, or when lunch includes wine. Hallstatt is the more obvious name, but parking there cannot be reserved and visitor cars cannot enter its historic centre; the Grossglockner is the trip where a car genuinely creates the experience.
Compare rental cars for a Grossglockner day from Salzburg
Book a car only after the road status and rental terms both work for your date. On a clear open-season day, the freedom to wait at a viewpoint is precisely what you are paying for.
