Eagle's Nest from Salzburg: Is the Kehlsteinhaus Tour Worth €105?

Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read

The tour is worth it if you want the Kehlsteinhaus without piecing together three buses; it is not worth it for the views alone, and it only runs while the mountain road is open. The Eagle’s Nest and Berchtesgaden tour from Salzburg takes 4.5 hours, costs €105 per person and is rated 4.6 from 1,975 reviews. The Kehlsteinhaus lies across the border in Germany, near Berchtesgaden, not in Austria.

What the tour includes

According to the booking page, the price covers transport from and to Salzburg, the entrance ticket and the lift to the top, with skip-the-line entry. The live guide speaks English or German. Food, drinks and tips are not part of it, and the page suggests bringing cash. The meeting point is Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1 in Salzburg.

Take your passport or ID card: the page warns that border controls are possible.

Reviewers rate the guides at 4.8 out of 5 and the transport at 4.9, with value for money at 4.5, the lowest of the three. The recurring complaint is time. Some travellers say the stop at the Eagle’s Nest feels rushed, and others would have liked longer in Berchtesgaden, where for some there was time for little more than lunch.

What the place is

The Kehlsteinhaus stands at 1,834 metres. You do not walk up from the bus car park below the house: according to the Berchtesgaden tourist office, you walk through a 124-metre tunnel and then ride a lift up 124 metres to the house. The building was a gift for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday, and it is what the booking page means by “Hitler’s famous retreat”. Today it is a mountain restaurant with a small exhibition on its history.

For the wider history of the Nazi era on this mountain, the tourist office points to the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre nearby. Whether your tour stops there depends on the operator, so look at the itinerary before you book if that matters to you.

Season and weather

This is the detail that catches people out. The Berchtesgaden tourist office says the Kehlstein season begins in early to mid-May and ends in late October to early November, depending on the weather. Buses can be suspended for storms, snowfall or rockfall. A cloudy day also means the view you came for may not be there; the booking page offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which covers a forecast you do not like but not a sudden fog.

Late October is right at the edge. If you are reading this in autumn, check that the tour has dates.

Doing it on your own

The usual way up is the Kehlstein bus, which leaves from Obersalzberg (Salzbergstraße 45, Berchtesgaden), near the Documentation Centre. According to the tourist office, the first bus up leaves at 8:30 am, the last at 4 pm, the last return at 4:50 pm, and buses run every 25 minutes. The fare for the bus and lift is set by the operator each season; look it up on the Berchtesgaden tourist office page rather than trusting a number from us.

To reach Obersalzberg without a car, you take a bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and change to a local bus up the hill. Journey planners show several changes, so check the timetable for your date. We have not verified one and will not quote it.

By car, Obersalzberg is the place to park, because the road above is not for private traffic. If you would rather drive than coordinate buses, compare rental cars for Salzburg; allow for the morning start if you want the first buses and the clearest views.

The cheaper half-day tour is described as a trip to Berchtesgaden and the Königssee. Its short description does not mention the Kehlsteinhaus, so check its booking page before you count on the summit.

Who should skip it

  • Wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility. The booking page lists both under “not suitable for” and says the tour is not wheelchair-accessible. Ask the operator before you plan around it.
  • Anyone who wants a relaxed day. Four and a half hours with a lunch stop and a rushed summit is a schedule, not a hike.
  • Travellers who dislike heights or lifts. The last part of the route is a lift in the rock.

Our take

Book the tour if the Kehlsteinhaus is the point, you travel without a car, and the dates fall inside the season. Go on your own if you have a car, want more time on the summit, or want to add the Documentation Centre. Pets are not allowed on the tour.
