Salzburg Car Hire: What Do Excess, Deposit and Counter Extras Mean?
Updated October 23, 2026 · 6 min read
Compare the total conditions, not just the first price. For Salzburg, the decisive lines are the excess, the security deposit, accepted payment card, fuel policy, mileage and any cross-border permission. A cheap rate can still be the right one, but only when the driver can meet its deposit and card rules. Open the rental conditions for the exact car before paying; figures from another vehicle or supplier do not transfer.
Excess and deposit are different
The excess is the amount for which the renter may remain liable under the included damage cover after covered damage. The deposit is money blocked or charged as security at collection. They can be different amounts, and neither tells you by itself what damage is excluded. Tyres, glass, the underside, keys and incorrect fuel are common items to inspect in the wording rather than assume.
CDW means collision damage waiver. It is not automatically the same as protection with no excess, and the precise exclusions belong to the rental agreement. If a comparison site offers separate full protection, read who handles a claim: reimbursement after the rental is different from the desk supplier waiving liability there and then.
What the desk will ask for
Check whose name must appear on the payment card, whether a debit card is accepted, the required licence documents and how long the deposit can remain unavailable. The main driver should be present with the original documents specified in the booking terms. Do not rely on a screenshot of a headline such as “debit cards accepted”; conditions can differ by location and car class.
Age rules are equally supplier-specific. A company may accept a younger driver but add a young-driver fee, restrict vehicle groups, or require that the licence has been held for a stated period. We do not quote a universal minimum age or charge because Salzburg rental desks do not share one rule.
Extras that alter the final bill
An additional driver, child seat, winter equipment, after-hours collection and one-way return can each be priced separately. Reserve essential child equipment rather than expecting spare stock. For fuel, “full to full” means returning the vehicle with the agreed level; a prepaid or service-refuelling option follows different conditions. Photograph the fuel gauge and every marked panel when you collect and return the car.
Ask whether the Austrian motorway vignette is already included. ASFINAG says motorways and expressways generally require one for cars up to 3.5 tonnes, while certain Alpine routes carry an additional section toll. A Salzburg registration plate does not prove that every toll product needed for your route is covered.
A five-minute comparison before booking
Put the shortlisted offers side by side and record: payable price, excess, deposit, card type, fuel policy, mileage, border permission and desk opening time. If you plan to enter Germany, tell the supplier before booking rather than assuming a border near Salzburg makes permission automatic. Keep the voucher and condition page available offline.
Compare Salzburg rental cars and their conditions
Choose the offer whose deposit you can comfortably leave unavailable and whose exclusions you understand. Paying a little more can be sensible; buying an unexplained counter product under time pressure is not a comparison strategy.
