Hohensalzburg Fortress: Tickets, Funicular or Walk, and How Long to Allow

Buy the full ticket, take the funicular up and walk down. The Hohensalzburg Fortress admission ticket rates 4.6 from 2,798 reviews and costs €19.20 with the funicular. The fortress itself is the same whichever option you pick; what changes is the way up.

Which ticket

The fortress sells several tickets. These are the 2026 adult prices on the operator’s price page.

TicketWith funicularFootpath onlyIncludes
Basic€15.50€12.00Fortress access
All Inclusive€19.20€14.50Everything, including the Prince’s Chambers

The Prince’s Chambers are the reason to pay for the top ticket: the listing describes them as among the best-preserved secular Gothic interiors in Europe. The listing also names the Magic Theatre and the castle museum. Children cost less, and the operator says children under six travelling with an adult go free. The Salzburg Card covers the fortress and one funicular trip each.

On the booking page, the funicular ride is included only with the matching option, and the voucher has to be exchanged for a ticket at the cashier desk at Festungsgasse 4.

Funicular or walk?

The FestungsBahn has run since 1892 and is Austria’s oldest funicular still in service. The ride is about 54 seconds and a car leaves every 10 minutes. The booking page puts the alternative walk at 20 to 30 minutes uphill.

The funicular saves you that climb, and the saving is worth having in summer heat or with children. In dry weather the walk is pleasant and costs €4.70 less on the All Inclusive ticket.

The funicular has scheduled maintenance closures. In those weeks the fortress stays open on foot, so check the dates before you travel.

How long to allow

The visit is self-guided and the listing gives no duration, so plan generously, especially if you want to see the Prince’s Chambers and the museums as well as the view. Reviewers like the views and the exhibits, but several mention that the grounds are confusing: one asked for a clearer map and warned of “lots of steps”. Ask for a plan at the desk.

Who may struggle

The booking page lists people with mobility impairments under “not suitable for”. The city tourism board describes the funicular as wheelchair accessible, but the fortress buildings involve many steps. If this matters, call the fortress before buying a ticket instead of relying on either statement.

Private tour or ticket only?

There is also a skip-the-line private tour of the fortress at €212.60 per person, 2 to 4 hours, rated 4.9 from 12 reviews. A guide adds context the panels do not, but at roughly eleven times the ticket price, it only makes sense for history enthusiasts. For most visitors the self-guided ticket is enough.
